One notable example of this urban renewal and densification effort is the Meret Oppenheim Hochhaus, located in Basel’s Gundeldinger Quarter. The project is part of the Südpark ensemble, which began in 2002 when Herzog & de Meuron won an SBB-organized competition to develop two plots south of Basel’s main train station. These plots are strategically connected to the station and the city via the “Passerelle,” an overhead walkway spanning the railway tracks. The Südpark, completed in 2012, and the Meret Oppenheim Hochhaus together create a new spatial framework for access to both the train station and the city center.
Beyond improving connectivity, these projects redefine the northern edge of the Gundeldinger Quarter, a densely populated and vibrant area affectionately known as the “Gundeli” by Basel residents. This neighborhood is characterized by its diversity and lively street life, making it a dynamic and evolving part of the city.
